‘He will add something’: Pepijn Lijnders wowed by 23-year-old Liverpool player
Liverpool newcomer Diogo Jota has been praised by Reds assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders following his impressive display in the Premier League on Monday night.
The Portugal international, who joined Liverpool from Wolves earlier this month, made his debut for Jurgen Klopp’s side off the bench in the League Cup victory over Lincoln last week.
Against Arsenal, Jota came on in the 80th minute and had several chances to get on the scoresheet before getting his goal two minutes from time, volleying into the corner of Bernd Leno’s net.
The 23-year-old became just the 13th player to score on his Premier League debut for Liverpool and the second to do so against Arsenal, after Sadio Mane.
Ahead of the League Cup meeting with the Gunners on Thursday night, Lijnders spoke of how impressed he was with the newcomer and what he’ll bring to the team.
“Diogo, for passionate players, for players who have goals in them, there is always space at Liverpool,” Lijnders told the Reds . “A great desire to learn our game, he will add something.
“I said last week he is at the same level technically as our front three and the one thing I found really difficult to coach is the intuition in the box.
“Being in the right position to score like the pure instinct of a striker – what we want from many players, of course, but especially from our front three.
“He, in 10 or 15 minutes, was three or four times in the position to score, so that’s really something that is good.”

Jota has become one of the Premier League’s brightest talents in recent years and, at just 23 years old, the Portugal international is only just getting started for club and country.
He flew under the radar somewhat while at Wolves but he’s hit the ground running at Liverpool, which bodes well for the future considering he’s still familiarising himself with the team’s tactics, not to mention general progress as he continues to gain experience.
