‘He was very tough’… Mo Salah says £7m defender Chelsea let go was absolutely incredible

It’s very rare for Mohamed Salah to struggle against any defender.

The Egyptian is one of the best wingers the Premier League has ever seen, and he’s gotten the better of almost every full-back he’s ever faced.

However, even the best footballers have those players they just can’t get the better of, and speaking on the , Salah has now named the toughest defender he’s ever faced.

Interestingly, Salah named Cesar Azpilicueta as one of the best defenders he’s ever faced, claiming that the former Chelsea defender was very tough to play against before he left the Blues in the summer.

Azpilicueta the toughest

Salah shared his verdict on the Spaniard.

“Who’s the toughest left-back you have ever faced?” Salah was asked.

“I would say Azpilicueta was tough. I know in the end he ended up playing on the right side, but he was very tough and I would say Ashley Cole. I played against him when I was at Basel, he reads the game, he was very smart, he wasn’t the tallest but he was really tough,” Salah said.

Could’ve been teammates

Salah has named Azpilicueta as one of his greatest foes, but in another world, these two could’ve been the best of friends and long-term teammates at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, Salah’s first taste of English football was at Chelsea, and while it didn’t work out for the attacker in west London, with a bit more patience, he could’ve been a star for the Blues.

Azpilicueta hasn’t been discussed all that much since his departure from Chelsea in the summer, but Salah’s comments here serve as a solid reminder that the Spaniard was a top-class defender and one of the most consistent players in the league over the past 10 years.
