‘He was very assured’: Andros Townsend left very impressed by Tottenham Hotspur player’s latest display for his country

Andros Townsend has been left seriously impressed by Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier’s performance for England against Italy.

Gareth Southgate faces a number of tough decisions going into England’s final warm-up game before the World Cup.

The Three Lions have already had their relegation from their Nations League group confirmed.

Dier partnered Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker as part of a three-man defence against Italy.

John Stones missed out through suspension, while Conor Coady and Fikayo Tomori were unused substitutes.

It was a tough watch for England fans, although Dier came out of the game with more credit than most.

His teammate Harry Kane believes he’s in the best form of his career, and Townsend was also impressed by Dier’s performance.

Dier making late claim for World Cup spot

Eric Dier’s last England appearance came against Iceland in November 2020 before playing Italy.

The Spurs defender has been in impressive form this season, unlike many of his England teammates.

Harry Maguire can’t break into Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side, and Tyrone Mings lost the captain’s armband at Aston Villa.

An opportunity has certainly arisen for the 29-year-old.

Townsend was left so impressed by Dier that he believes he’s now put John Stones under pressure for his position.

“Seeing Eric Dier’s performance the other night, he was very assured, he was a leader, he was trying to break lines, he was trying to play forward.” .

“I think he’s moved ahead of one of two others.

“I think (John) Stones may be now coming back in, he needs to play well as I think his position’s under threat.

“There’s been a load of noise about Harry Maguire, but at the end of the day he will be a starter.

“So, I think that last place, I think Stones is fighting with Eric Dier for that last centre-half spot.”
