‘He was excellent’: Euro 2020 boss raves about ‘comfortable’ Leeds star after display
Gareth Southgate has given huge credit to Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips after his England performance on Tuesday night at Euro 2020.
England manager Gareth Southgate singled out the 25-year-old Whites midfielder last night.
The Three Lions beat Czech Republic 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in the final match of the group. Therefore, they leapfrogged their opponents into top spot and it means they’ll stay at Wembley for their Round of 16 tie.
Raheem Sterling’s goal was the difference between the two countries, so England’s defence deserve immense credit for a third consecutive clean sheet. They are yet to concede at the tournament.
Euro 2020 boss Southgate was impressed by the impact of Phillips against Czech Republic:
“I thought he was excellent, really good. I like him in that role, the defensive pivot,” Southgate said, as quoted by the .
“His use of the ball was good, he found the right spaces to go and receive, he played it as he plays it for Leeds. We know how comfortable he is in that role. He showed again how well he’s adapted to international football.”

Leeds star Phillips played his way into best England XI
Phillips has arguably been the surprise package in the England squad so far at Euro 2020.
The Leeds-born star has played every single minute.
He’s usually a deep-lying playmaker at club level for Leeds, but has shown versatility as an all-action central midfielder of his country.
Southgate was impressed though last night when Phillips dropped into deeper positions in the second half.
After that, he looks in complete control in his favoured role on the pitch.
