Dutch football journalist Valentijn Driessen of De Telegraaf has shed some light on the future of Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn as we near the end of the season.

Spurs splashed £27 million () to sign the talented Dutch winger in January 2020 and although he started off his career in North London in spectacular style, things haven’t quite worked out for him.

Bergwijn has spent a little over two years at Tottenham so far but he has only started 25 times in the Premier League. That’s not enough at all for a player as talented as him, but there’s not much he can do to change things either.

The 24-year-old, , was very close to leaving Spurs in January with Ajax heavily linked with a move for him. That didn’t materialise then but there’s a good chance it could happen this summer.

A return to Holland has been on the cards for Bergwijn for a few months now and Dutch giants Ajax see him as a perfect fit for their squad. Driessen is convinced the Dutchman wants that move as well.

The journalist said on : “He has now also seen that a foreign adventure is not everything.

“Even if you score a few goals, you have no certainty of playing. He also wants to be in the Dutch national team.

“I think he wants to go back to Amsterdam on his knees.”

Bergwijn is a hugely talented player, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. However, is he ever going to be ahead of Son Heung-min or Dejan Kulusevski in the pecking order? We don’t think so.

That leaves the 24-year-old in a very difficult position.

With the World Cup coming up at the end of this year, Bergwijn needs regular game time to have any chance of making it into the Dutch national team.

Staying at Spurs will simply not help him, which makes a move away this summer the best option for him.
