‘He told us’… Journalist shares bizarre conversation with Brendan Rodgers over Celtic’s transfers

Kind of away from speculation surrounding Celtic’s recruitment, a journalist has shared a conversation he had with Brendan Rodgers about the Hoops’ transfer business this season.

The Celtic fans have been left perplexed as to why the club are now offloading players who were signed in the summer window that now are deemed surplus to requirements.

Gustaf Lagerbielke, Hyeokkyu Kwon and Marco Tilio are all out or in the case of Lagerbielke, on their way out, and with Celtic still struggling to add new faces this January, the fans will all be wondering just what is going on at the club.

Journalist, Andrew Smith, has shared a conversation he has with Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers, that could shed some light on why the Hoops’ last two transfer windows have been such a disaster.

Smith said [], “By the way, inside the club, they know. Rodgers knows. He wanted four first-team-ready players last summer. And then it went to six because Jota and Starfelt left.

“He told us this. He hasn’t got any of those players in. So he’s five short [if you include Nicholas Khun as s first team player] on how he wanted to change things.

“He knows that’s not good enough. A couple of months ago when he said I wanted this and I wanted that, I said ‘Have you told the board?’

“He said, ‘No’ and I was thinking why are you telling us journalists?

“And I didn’t want to say, ‘Why not?’. Why would he not tell the board?”

Why would he not tell the board? Surely as the manager of a top football club (in fact, ANY football club), you tell your superiors in the boardroom the players you want, they tell the recruitment department and away you go!

The fact that Rodgers seems to have admitted to a lack of basic communication on such an important issue will leave the Celtic fans absolutely baffled. Unless, of course, he was being sarcastic.

Entering the final day of the transfer window, the Hoops support will be hoping that there will be a few new faces added to the squad.

After hearing what Smith had to say, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
