‘He told me’: Taiwo Awoniyi now shares what Jurgen Klopp said to him just before he left Liverpool

, “Even when I was in Liverpool’s second team I learned so much. The way they set up training, and all the fantastic players around me, made it a learning process.
“Before I left, he (Klopp) told me that Union Berlin were pushing everything to sign me permanently. He said, ‘That is the key for a player, the moment a team wants to sign you so much that means you belong there.’ That was the last discussion we had and he was right.”
Awoniyi was never able to play for Liverpool during his six years at the club due to work permit issues, but now he’s finally made his Premier League debut and scored in the top flight.
Forest forward Awoniyi shares what Klopp told him
Klopp’s final message to Awoniyi about joining a club that really wants to sign you should encourage many Forest fans.
Their new striker scored the only goal in their first Premier League win of the season against West Ham.
“His tenacity and in his general play he was a real big threat for us and a big reason we could play high up the pitch. I’m really happy with him. He’s settled in well off the pitch.”
The Nigerian’s form this season could be one of the keys to Forest surviving on their return to England’s top flight.
Cooper’s side brought in another forward last weekend in Emmanuel Dennis, and the Nigerian pair will need to hit the ground running.
Forest may have got a bit lucky to pick up three points against West Ham, but Awoniyi, Dennis and the rest of Forest’s new recruits have the talent to stay up this season, but it will come down to how Cooper can manage them to make it happen.
