‘He still loves Liverpool’: John Aldridge backs 30-year-old for Anfield stay

John Aldridge has told the that he would love to see Gini Wijnaldum stay at Anfield but concedes it might not be possible.

The Dutch midfielder is enjoying a quality campaign under Jurgen Klopp but is out of contract during the summer.

At this stage, an extension hasn’t been forthcoming and the 30-year-old could walk away from the Premier League champions for nothing.

Since arriving from Newcastle in 2016, Wijnaldum has played 207 times for Liverpool, scoring 20 goals and claiming 16 assists.

Aldridge has suggested that he’d like to see the player stay at the club.

“Gini is in an ideal position now. He still loves Liverpool I’m sure. But there are going to be reasons behind it. Only he knows. If Gini wants to go, he’ll go. It’s as simple as that.

“It’s all in his court. Will the club push the boat out and give him what he wants? I don’t know, we’ll have to watch this space and trust the manager.

“If he wants to go, he’ll probably go.”

TBR View – Liverpool should do whatever it takes to keep Wijnaldum

The champions don’t get a lot wrong when it comes to transfers but letting Wijnaldum go could be an error of judgement.

He has been simply brilliant this season, starting 13 of Liverpool’s 14 games in the Premier League.

Wijnaldum has proved a decent servant to the club and even if it’s only for a couple more years, the Reds should hand him an extension.

Curtis Jones is coming through the ranks but right now he’s probably not going to step up and play each and every week.

Wijnaldum is proven and has plenty more years left in the tank at the top level.

On current form, handing the man with 62 Holland caps an extension looks like an absolute no-brainer.
