‘He is my boy’… Jose Mourinho loved coaching 27-year-old Manchester United player

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been praised by Jose Mourinho, who deemed him a great player to coach.

The iconic Portuguese manager, speaking to Rio Ferdinand on , described the Red Devils ace as “my boy”, listing him among some the best players he has coached.

Mourinho managed Manchester United between 2016 and 2018, leading the Red Devils to a Europa League trophy and the Carabao Cup.

To this day, the 61-year-old’s work at Manchester United makes him the most successful manager they’ve had in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, having lifted more than one trophy.

Although Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford didn’t end on the highest of notes, he still had praise for some of the players he worked with.

Talking to Ferdinand and Stephen Howson on FIVE, Mourinho hesitated when it came to listing his favourite players from a coaching perspective, for fear of leaving out some iconic names.

“The players that I most enjoyed [coaching] were the ones that gave me everything,” said Mourinho. “Everything.

“And there are dozens and dozens and dozens, and maybe they aren’t the most talented ones, just the ones that gave everything.

“The ones that I felt they couldn’t give anything more than what they gave, these are my players.

“Then if you want to, kind of, preferred… I don’t want to be unfair to people and I will be unfair but when you play a kid, the kid becomes your kid for life. That is always my feeling.

“So I look to Raphael Varane [at Real Madrid] now at the end of his career, he is my kid.

“When I look to Scott McTominay, [Paul] Pogba on the bench, play Scott McTominay in Champions League against Sevilla, he is my boy.

“When I go club to club, I find my boys and they are always going to be my boys.”

Since then, McTominay has clocked up 237 appearances at the club, and currently leads their goalscoring charts with eight goals from 28 outings.
