‘He has to play’: Premier League legend wants Liverpool 22-year-old to start on Sunday

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been praised by Premier League legend Mark Schwarzer, who would like to see the 22-year-old start for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds on Sunday.

With Alisson Becker out injured, Kelleher was named in the Liverpool starting XI in Tuesday night’s Champions League Group D meeting with Ajax.

The game was only his fifth senior appearance for the Reds and his European debut, but you’d have never known by the performance he delivered.

The Irishman produced a superb display, making numerous saves including two from Noussair Mazraoui and a brilliant stop from Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar in the closing stages.

Kelleher’s efforts were crucial as only one goal separated the two sides, Curtis Jones netting in the 58th minute for a 1-0 win and a spot in the last 16 of the competition as group winners.

With Alisson for another two weeks, Schwarzer believes that Kelleher needs to start again when Liverpool face Wolves at Anfield this weekend.

“He took his opportunity,” Schwarzer, a retired goalkeeper with Premier League appearances under his belt, told .

“It was a massive call from Jurgen Klopp to play him ahead of Adrian. I was surprised as were most around the stadium, but he came through with flying colours.

“For me, he has to play on the weekend. He looked more than comfortable. A huge night for him.”

A bold move from Klopp, but one that has paid off handsomely, with the rarely-seen Kelleher very much the man of the moment at Anfield now.

Given how good he was, you’d expect him to be in the starting XI against Wolves too, something many Liverpool fans would be more than happy with.
