Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has revealed that Niklas Sule received a lucrative transfer offer from Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old has been excellent for Bayern over the years but he has entered the final year of his contract. The Bavarians tried everything they could to tie him down to a new deal, but he wasn’t keen on staying.

It was earlier this month that Sule will join Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer. He’s set to pen a four-year deal there, but if Matthaus is to be believed, the defender could’ve earned a lot more had he accepted Newcastle’s offer.

The Germany legend revealed that the Magpies offered to double his salary, but he turned them.

Lothar Matthaus: Newcastle made a big offer to sign Niklas Sule

Matthaus told : “It is not about money. Otherwise, he (Sule) would have gone to England. He had had an offer from Newcastle United, where he would have earned twice as much.

“He is looking for a sporting challenge. And at Bayern, he no longer felt valued. In recent years, Sule has often been attacked because of his weight and no one has protected him. During his long injury break, he sacrificed himself for the club. He won the Champions League and played great games.

“The club didn’t get enough. And I know THAT is the reason why Süle said to his team of advisors, ‘we don’t need to talk to Bayern anymore. I want to go’.”

What a signing Sule would’ve been!

The 26-year-old, , has been one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga over the last few years having won 14 major trophies in his career already.

He’s now entering the prime years of his career as well and he would’ve been an incredible signing for the Magpies, especially on a free transfer.

Sadly, he’s off to Dortmund now and Eddie Howe, PIF and Newcastle have to look for another central defender to bring in once the summer window opens.
