The Gunners are in need of extra depth in midfield, with ongoing concerns over Thomas Partey’s fitness.

Of course, Declan Rice has excelled since his summer switch from West Ham while Kai Havertz seems to be finding his feet of late. But it’s no secret that since Granit Xhaka left, the left-sided role in Arteta’s midfield three has been up for grabs.

And Antwerp’s CEO is refusing to rule out Vermeeren leaving Belgium in January.

Jacques admits Arsenal target Vermeeren could leave

Speaking to , Jacques admitted there is a chance Vermeeren could head out the door in January.

And the club chief also suggested a possible move could break the Belgian transfer record.

“We don’t assume it and we hope not, but there is a chance that Arthur will no longer be owned by Antwerp after January,” Jacques said. “The interest in him is growing every week – logical, given the steps he has taken. He can leave, leave and stay for a while or just stay.”

He added: “If we sell it, it will be at the right price anyway. We’ll see if he becomes the most expensive outgoing transfer in Belgium ever.”

Vermeeren has impressed for Antwerp this season and is attracting admiring glances from a host of top clubs. The 18-year-old has netted two goals and provided five assists in all competitions this term.

His displays in the Champions League have caught the eye and he starred for Antwerp in a 3-2 win over Barcelona last night.

The Belgian has been labelled a ‘superstar’ and clearly has a bright future ahead of him in European football.

But Arsenal may be looking to bring in a more experienced option in January as they bid to go one better and win the league this season.

Nevertheless, if Vermeeren is available, it could be too good of an opportunity to turn down given his incredible potential.
