Exeter City
Their current league position might not show it but, for the second half of the season in particular, Paul Tisdale’s Exeter City have quietly gone about their business and shot up the League Two table.
After their FA Cup experience against Liverpool in late 2015, where they took the Premier League side back to Anfield for a replay, their league form stagnated and it looked certain that the only thing the Grecians would be fighting for this season is a lowly mid-table position.
Yet since late February, Tisdale has managed to inspire his side to a ten game unbeaten run (prior to their loss against Mansfield last week) and has given them real hope of sneaking into a play-off spot – something that even Exeter fans would have conceded was beyond them at Christmas.
In a season where Tisdale made his 500th game as manager of the club, he’s brought the best out of young academy forward Ollie Watkins (20), who notably fired in a spectacular injury time winner against fierce rivals Plymouth during the unbeaten run.
With young players coming through and with confidence brimming through the side after their post-Christmas revival, although the play-offs this year may be slightly out of reach, it would be hard to see past them mounting a proper challenge for promotion in the 2016-17 League Two season.
Northampton Town
Last but not least, it’s impossible to talk about League Two at the moment without mentioning the newly-crowned champions, Northampton Town.
21 games unbeaten, only a single loss in 30 league games, and the opportunity to break the 100-point mark – Chris Wilder’s side haven’t just won the league, they’ve completely ran away with it.
The most impressive thing isn’t just the fact that the club overcame their well-documented adversity to win the league, it’s the way that the Cobblers have redefined the stereotype of League Two football; they’ve shown that it isn’t all about hopeful long balls over the top for a striker to run on to, instead it’s possible to bring flowing, attacking football to the lowest division of the Football League.
