Harry Wilson pinpoints moment he knew he had to leave Liverpool
Liverpool sold Harry Wilson this summer to Fulham, bringing an end to a 16-year spell for the Welsh winger on Merseyside.
The Reds managed to get a cool £12m for Wilson from the Cottagers, who splashed out to bring in a player who is proven at Championship level.
Wilson’s spells with Derby, Bournemouth (in the Premier League) and Cardiff, all showed what he was capable of. But despite his impressive form for those teams, he never quite made the jump to Liverpool’s first XI.
And Wilson believes he knew the exact moment that he needed to leave.
Wilson pinpoints time to leave Liverpool
Speaking in an interview for , Wilson believes that his chance had come at Liverpool back in the summer of 2019.
“It was in 2019, when I came back from Derby. That pre-season at Liverpool, we played a few games in England and then went out to America and France. I played pretty much every game, scored a few goals and felt like I was in a good position,” Wilson said.
“Then we played Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley and I was 19th man. The disappointment of that really hit me. I felt that was my chance, and it had gone. I thought I’d done all I could, and I think that was when I started to accept that I’d have to leave.”
Wilson scored on his opening appearance for Fulham this weekend.
Time for Wilson to shine
The £12m deal this summer was good business all around. Fulham got themselves a fine player, while Liverpool got a good fee for someone who’d never really challenged the first-team.
But the time is now for Wilson to really show his worth. He’ll have an element of wanting to prove himself to those at Liverpool.
That, of course, will benefit Fulham, who have already seen initial signs of what he’ll bring to the table.
