Harry Redknapp claims he told Tottenham to sign midfielder years before they paid £40m for him

Tottenham Hotspur has always placed great emphasis on promoting and recruiting young talent throughout its history.

Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert are the latest examples of that, to name only a few, and indeed Harry Kane is the obvious success story from the academy in recent years.

Though, it’s just emerged that they actually snubbed the chance to sign a promising youngster a number of years back despite the recommendation of Harry Redknapp.

In fact, Tottenham ended up signing him last summer as an already-established Premier League player for a substantial sum…

Harry Redknapp told Tottenham to sign James Maddison when he was a kid

Speaking on talkSPORT (20/08, 8:12 am), former manager Harry Redknapp revealed that he told Tottenham about James Maddison when he was a kid at Coventry City.

“I have been a big fan of Maddison,” Redknapp said.

“I first saw him play at Coventry as a kid, and I came away, I remember ringing David Pleat at Tottenham, saying I have seen a kid tonight, I was at QPR at the time, I said what a talent this kid looks, you know.

“Tottenham looked at him then but felt that they had other players similar or whatever to him and didn’t do anything.

“I am a big Maddison fan, and last night in the first half, he looked back to his best. That injury did set him back last year.

“He has got to do it consistently over the season. He has had seasons where he has had great runs and then tailed off a bit. Big year for him, this year I think.”

Ange Postecoglou says James Maddison is determined to get back into England squad

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s 1-1 draw against Leicester last night, Ange Postecoglou said he’s sensed a hunger in Maddison, who joined Spurs in a £40m deal in 2023.

“Yeah, I’ve sensed in Madders that he’s come back, he’s really determined to have a big season and hopefully that gets him back in the England frame, but more importantly for us hopefully gets him back to the form we know he can have.”

Certainly during the first half, the 27-year-old looked back on top form and was the main creative outlet for Spurs.
