Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Junior Firpo were among the stars to suggest that Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips deserved to win England’s Player of the Year award.

Player of the year

Phillips’ form for England was recognised yesterday,as he collected the trophy from Declan Rice.

The Leeds star played in every game for England at the European Championships, where he really announced his quality to the world.

And the news was greeted with great joy from his England teammates on social media website Instagram, with Maguire writing: ‘Well deserved mate’.

Rising profile

Phillips’ profile was raised massively through his performances at the Euro’s.

His main competition for the award was likely to be Raheem Sterling and Jordan Pickford, who also enjoyed strong tournaments.

But Phillips’ role in the midfielder was crucial to the Three Lions getting to the final.

Going into the tournament there were actually some doubts over whether Phillips would even start, but he claimed an assist against Croatia in the opener and never looked back.

Phillips is now playing a key role for both club and country, and the Leeds man is set to feature regularly over the international break – where England face three World Cup qualifiers in the next few days.
