Harry Kane says £17m Aston Villa player was simply ‘fantastic’ against Bayern Munich

Aston Villa produced one of the headline results of the UEFA Champions League matchday as they secured a 1-0 win against Bayern Munich at Villa Park.

Jhon Duran scored the solitary goal of the game with ten minutes left on the clock as he latched on to a pass from Pau Torres and lobbed the ball into the net over Manuel Neuer’s head, who was off his line.

It turned out to be a frustrating day in the office for Harry Kane and co as a spirited showing from the hosts spearheaded them to one of the biggest wins in their recent history.

And the England captain singled out one Aston Villa player for his fantastic performance in the 1-0 win.

Emiliano Martinez made a series of notable saves from Kane and Michael Olise and he ensured Villa came away with three points.

Speaking after the game, Kane lauded the Argentine goalkeeper for his saves and expressed his disappointment at not being able to find the back of the net.

“It was one of those where the keeper has had a fantastic game for them,” said Kane (quotes via ).

“He probably could’ve been out there for another 20 minutes and the ball wouldn’t have been in the back of the net.

“Unfortunately, in the second half, we couldn’t defend the counterattack. But we also saw positives, that we have to take away with us and continue to work on.

“We’ve got a lot of games coming and we need every individual. Of course, we are disappointed, and we have to learn from our mistakes today. It’s still early in the season.”

Martinez’s stats vs Bayern Munich

Martinez made seven saves in total – out of which three were efforts from inside the penalty area – as he finished the game with one punch and two high claims.

The 32-year-old’s saves against Kane, in particular, were simply out of the top drawer as he earned himself a rating of 8.9, making him the highest-rated player on the pitch by some distance.

Signed for from Arsenal, Martinez is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in world football and his form will be crucial if Aston Villa want to have a deep run in Europe this season.
