Guillem Balague delivers update on Newcastle’s pursuit of Unai Emery

Guillem Balague has told his followers on Twitter that Villarreal’s board are unclear as to what is going on – as Newcastle try to poach Unai Emery.

Emery, 49, has emerged as the front runner to take over at Newcastle – despite remaining in charge of the current Europa League champions.

However, the ex-Arsenal gaffer has overseen a poor start to 2021-22 – winning just two of 11 league games. Villarreal are keen to keep him.

But a report from that Newcastle are expecting to appoint the Spaniard in the next 48 hours. Amanda Staveley is confident.

The Toon co-owner has been encouraged after Zoom meetings with Emery on Sunday. It is believed Emery will take charge of this weekend’s match.

Balague has given a further update to the initial reports this morning. He states that Villarreal’s board are not in the loop – and Emery will cost £5m.

Balague on Emery: Newcastle edging closer, £5m fee a bargain

Emery is a massive coup from Newcastle. While the lure of Antonio Conte was always going to be somewhat optimistic, Emery is right up there.

His work at Arsenal was initially seen as a poor spell in charge, but in hindsight with Arsenal in transition – he did an excellent job.

At Villarreal, he is doing even better. Emery loves the Europa League and won the competition for a fourth time, the first with Villarreal.

A brilliant record, great experience, good pedigree and working with big-name players – all on his CV. Newcastle are getting a bargain.
