Greek reports doubt it but Arsenal outcast Sokratis is reportedly a target for Olympiakos

Olympiakos have joined the race to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Arsenal this month, according to reports.

Arsenal are looking for something of a clear out this month as they hope to raise money to bring in players in other more pressing areas of the pitch.

The defence is set for a full cleanse, with the likes of Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba already gone, and Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi allowed to move on.

Sokratis has had reported interest from Turkey, with Fenerbahce mentioned, but a move to his homeland now seems a possibility.

that Olympiakos are now targeting the defender this month. that Arsenal might agree to a mutual termination of his Arsenal contract, which would make the available for nothing to the Greek giants.

It would undoubtedly be an appealing move for the Greek defender at this stage of his career. However, Olympiakos are currently well-stocked at centre-back and are only likely to make a move if they lose coveted Senegalese defender Pape Abou Cisse.

in Turkey are suggesting that Olympiakos and Fenerbahce are now the only two teams willing to make a move for the experienced defender, who has not played a single game for the Gunners this season and was not registered in the Premier League squad at the start of the campaign.

It seems the interest from Greece is actually being pushed from the English press. In Greece, as the SDNA report shows, they are more stand-offish on a deal that would make little sense and would cost significant wages.

So perhaps it is one to take with a pinch of salt. Hopefully, Sokratis can find a seriously interested party soon so he can find regular playing time away from The Emirates.
