‘Great stuff’: Sam Allardyce says ‘amazing’ Newcastle United player has now gone up a level this season
Sam Allardyce has paid tribute to the performances of goalkeeper Nick Pope since his summer move to Newcastle United.
Eddie Howe brought Pope to the club during his first summer charge of the Magpies, taking Martin Dubravka’s spot in goal.
He has proved to be an upgrade on the man who has since joined Manchester United on loan and played a key part in Newcastle currently sitting fourth in the Premier League.
Pope looks all set to go to the World Cup and was part of the squad for the 2018 tournament when England made the semi-finals.

Allardyce on Pope
Allardyce has run the rule over England’s options ahead of the tournament in Qatar in a with his long-time assistant Sammy Lee.
He praised Pope, saying he is the toughest challenger Jordan Pickford has had since he became the England number one goalkeeper.
Allardyce said: “He’s doing great stuff at Newcastle.
“I think this has elevated him into challenging Pickford.
“The biggest challenge for Jordan since he got in the team as England goalkeeper.
“His form at Burnley, you don’t get recognised as much, but at Newcastle with all the hype there, it’s going to take him up a level.”
Most Newcastle fans would dearly love it if Pope was the England first choice instead of Pickford, but it looks like being the Everton man between the sticks against Iran next month, fitness permitting.
Pope got a chance to deputise for Pickford in the last round of internationals, but unfortunately made a late error which allowed Germany to grab a 3-3 draw at Wembley.
