Sunderland legend Marco Gabbiadini has taken to Twitter with a message praising the Black Cats‘ announcement on Aiden McGeady.
On Wednesday, the Stadium of Light outfit that the 35-year-old had penned a new one-year contract.
The previous Sunderland boss froze McGeady out, even sending him out on loan for the second half of 2019-20.
It looked as though he had no future at the Stadium of Light, but Lee Johnson’s arrival changed things.
McGeady finished the season with six goals and a massive 17 assists in all competitions.
He supplied the assist for Lynden Gooch’s winner against Tranmere in the EFL Trophy final in March.
McGeady even waived a contract clause to feature in the League One playoff defeat to Lincoln City.
However, his future was uncertain, given his contract was set to expire at the end of the season.
But following negotiations, McGeady returned to pre-season training on Wednesday and has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal.
And Gabbiadini, who made over 150 appearances for Sunderland and scored over 70 goals between 1987 and 1991, was delighted.

McGeady joined Sunderland in 2017 and has made 133 appearances, scoring 33 goals and registering 30 assists.
After penning the new contract, he told the Sunderland : “I’m pleased to have signed a new contract at the club and I’m looking forward to the new season.
“I’m happy at Sunderland and since returning to the team under Lee Johnson, I feel that my performances have shown that.
“We all know what the ambition is for next season and I’ve made no secret of the fact that I want to be part of the team that goes back up.
“My focus is to play and perform for Sunderland for as long as I can.”
