‘Great’: Jamie Carragher wowed by 18-year-old Liverpool gem against Preston

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has praised Tyler Morton for his role in the Reds’ opening goal against Preston in the Carabao Cup.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds looked to follow up their wonderful Premier League weekend win with progress to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Although Liverpool dominated possession in the first half, the hosts were more dangerous in front of goal.

The Reds failed to get a shot on target in the first 45 minutes, while the Lilywhites had three attempts on target.

Indeed, Liverpool came so close to conceding on 28 minutes when the hosts had three chances in quick succession.

Ali McCann laid the ball across for Sean Maguire to fire from close range, but Adrian was equal to it.

Ryan Ledson’s follow-up was blocked on the line by the face of Neco Williams before Brad Potts fired over.

Liverpool subsequently regrouped and broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute of the match.

A long pass out wide from Morton found Neco Williams, who cut back for Takumi Minamino to get in front of his marker and turn home.

The 18-year-old was making his first senior start for Liverpool and second first-team appearance for the club.

And Carragher was impressed, name-checking him on Twitter:

Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners in the end, Divock Origi adding a second with a wonderful scorpion kick eight minutes from time.

Morton has been at the Liverpool academy since the age of seven and made his Under-23s debut in 2020-21.

The 18-year-old netted 10 goals for the U18s and U23s in 2020-21 and played a key role as the young Reds reached the FA Youth Cup final.

This season, he has made 15 competitive appearances in all competitions.
