Granit Xhaka makes key Sunderland decision as former Arsenal star receives interest across the Premier League

Former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka is open to moving back to the Premier League with newly promoted Sunderland making him an offer, TBR Football can reveal.

During his time at Arsenal, Granit Xhaka made 297 appearances in red, a stint in England that was often embroiled in controversy.

Xhaka clashed with Arsenal fans on occasion, and was eventually stripped of the captaincy in 2019 by Unai Emery.

However, the Swiss international left Arsenal on a positive note — he was excellent for Mikel Arteta in his final season and he left for Bayer Leverkusen with a lot of good will.

And after two seasons back in the Bundesliga, Xhaka could now be set for a return to English football with Sunderland.

Granit Xhaka is ready to leave Bayer Leverkusen after Xabi Alonso departure

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that a number of clubs are now alerted to Xhaka’s potential availability.

The 32-year-old excelled for Leverkusen last term but with manager Xabi Alonso leaving for Real Madrid and Erik ten Hag coming in, Xhaka is now open to a move.

Saudi Pro League side Neom SC have offered Xhaka the chance to move to the Middle East, a move he’s seriously considering, whilst Turkish giants Fenerbahce have also held talks.

But a move back to England is an option for Xhaka.

After Sunderland considered a return for Jordan Henderson recently, they eventually decided against offering terms to the England international, who has now joined Brentford.

But given that Xhaka is slightly younger than 35-year-old Henderson, he’s being seen as a different proposition.

Sunderland face Premier League competition for Granit Xhaka

TBR Football understands that Sunderland co-owner Juan Sartori is pushing the move, and Xhaka has been offered a three-year deal which would see him become the club’s highest earner.

In addition to that bumper contract, Sunderland would also pay Leverkusen a fee of around £10m.

However, it’s understood that there is also interest in Xhaka across the Premier League right now.

The likes of Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham are all also considering a move for the 32-year-old.

Xhaka could earn huge money in Saudi Arabia if he does decide to opt for Neom’s offer, where he would then join former Arsenal teammate Alexandre Lacazette.

But perhaps a move back to the Premier League might prove too good to turn down for the Switzerland international.
