Graham Roberts has theory on why Tottenham defender was left out v Southampton

Graham Roberts has a theory that new interim Tottenham boss Ryan Mason left Joe Rodon out of his squad yesterday with one eye on this weekend’s Carabao Cup final.

Spurs beat Southampton 2-1 at home on Wednesday in the Premier League, which help should build some momentum ahead of the cup final against Manchester City.

However, there was a noticeable absence from Mason’s match day squad against Southampton.

Rodon, who cost Spurs £11million (), wasn’t involved against the Saints.

The 23-year-old had started the previous four league matches under ex-manager Jose Mourinho, and was beginning to show some strong form.

Roberts believes though that the Wales international was only left out of the group because he’s cup tied this weekend against Man City, so Mason treated the midweek game as a test run with the same squad.

TBR’s View:

Unfortunately, Rodon competed in the Carabao Cup for Swansea City this season before his switch to north London, and who knows whether or not he would have been involved this Sunday against Wembley.

Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier were the centre-back pairing who started last night, which is why they look like frontrunners to play against Man City. Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga were two alternative defensive options on the bench against Southampton.

If you look at all the centre-backs, powerhouse Rodon is arguably the one you’d pick out as being someone who can nail down a starting position moving forward if he’s given a fair chance.
