Graham Potter says Manchester United player put on a ‘masterclass’ in 0-0 draw against Aston Villa

Manchester United picked up a point on the road against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s men created very few chances but a point at Villa Park is certainly nothing to be sniffed at and it could keep him in the job.

Ten Hag’s position has been heavily scrutinised since INEOS’ takeover and TBR Football understands that United are interested in Gareth Southgate, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank.

Anyhow, if indeed the Dutchman does remain in post, he owes a lot to the performance of one of his players against Villa.

Graham Potter so impressed by Jonny Evans vs Aston Villa

Graham Potter has been out of work since his Chelsea sacking in April 2023.

It’s been reported that INEOS are admirers of Potter and over the last week or so, he has appeared in the media a lot more which usually indicates a manager is keen to get back into a job.

Perhaps he’s putting himself in the picture for the United job but either way, he waxed lyrical about Jonny Evans’ display against Aston Villa, speaking on .

“Sometimes in football it’s less important to be fast, it’s more important to be on time, in the right position on time,” Potter said.

“Any young defender watching there, it’s almost a masterclass about how to use strengths and combat what the opponent can do to you.”

Jonny Evans statistics vs Aston Villa

Evans’ statistics (per ) against Villa make for very impressive reading indeed and back up ten Hag’s decision to start him – which was a controversial one at the time.

The former Leicester City defender is out of contract next summer but with the way he’s playing, United should seriously consider extending it.

Evans isn’t just an experienced head in the dressing room but also a very good defender despite his age (36).

Jamie Carragher was also really impressed by Evans at the weekend.
