Graeme Souness shares what he likes about Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly amid words of caution
Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed a breakout season at the Emirates Stadium.
The 18-year-old only made his senior debut in September last year, when he made a late cameo in the 2–2 draw away at Manchester City.
However, Lewis-Skelly has done so well that he’s now Arsenal’s first-choice left-back, with 20 competitive appearances to his name this term.
Liverpool and Scotland legend Graeme Souness has now praised Lewis-Skelly, but he also issued a word of advice to the Gunners youngster.

Graeme Souness says Myles Lewis-Skelly ‘needs to wind his neck in’
Graeme Souness has confirmed he likes Myles Lewis-Skelly, saying he’s a fan of his attitude and backing him to become a “real player”.
Indeed, the pundit says he likes people with attitude in all walks of life, not just football.
However, Souness suggests he was not impressed by Lewis-Skelly’s goal celebration poking fun at Erling Haaland in Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Man City.
“I like Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly,” Souness wrote in the . “Attitude is oozing out of him and it’s why I think he’s going to be a real player.
“He put in a strong performance during Arsenal’s 5-1 defeat of Manchester City last weekend which included him mimicking Erling Haaland’s goal celebration after extending his team’s lead.
“I love attitude in all walks of life – and not just in the football world. People who go out there and say: ‘This is me. I’m going to do this.’ I like to see players who have b——-, too.
“But I have to say, having seen that celebration, I think he needs to wind his neck in.
“At 18, it’s a bit early to be going down the road of mimicking a player like Haaland, someone who’s achieved great things in our league.
“Wait till you’ve won a few things in our game, son. Just give it a few years. Listen and learn every day until then.
“Know that someone so young going down that road is not a good look.”
Rio Ferdinand’s counter-argument
An argument that often does the rounds online is that footballers these days aren’t characters like they used to be back in the day.
However, the minute a football player actually starts showing some personality, some people start saying they’re being disrespectful and so on and so forth.
Indeed, the Premier League authorities now seemingly want to crack down on celebrations that could be deemed inflammatory.
Rio Ferdinand defended Lewis-Skelly in face of criticism from the likes of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.
“I saw Gary Neville say it’s [Lewis-Skelly’s celebration] disrespectful,” he said on Five.
“Bro, some of the biggest, most iconic moments in Premier League history aren’t about football.
“Roy Keane in the tunnel with Vieira. Martin Keown with Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Adebayor running to the Arsenal fans. Me slapping Mr Bennett.
“Come on man. Gary Neville, one of his biggest moments was doing that [grabbing the Manchester United badge] to Liverpool fans after my goal.”
