Graeme Souness reckons Liverpool midfielder has been unleashed
Graeme Souness believes Jordan Henderson is now ‘off the leash’ following his recent position alteration for Liverpool.
The England international has been playing with more attacking responsibility of late, after reportedly having a conversation with manager Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp has been deploying him as a holding midfielder for most of the season, meaning he’s been in direct competition with Fabinho.
Klopp recently apologised to Henderson for shackling him (), and has since allowed him the license to operate more as a box-to-box midfielder.
In the eyes of former Red Souness, the move is a masterstroke.
He said, : “He’s got great energy, he’s box-to-box and he can go 90 minutes no problem. Now he’s off the leash and he’ll be better for it.
“With Fabinho it’s definitely his best position. He’s happy not to be involved. Jordan wants to be on the ball, involved and he’s got that athleticism to be sliding back, clearing your line and two or three seconds later be up the other end.”
TBR’s view
Henderson – who earns £100,000-a-week at Anfield () – was not seen by many as a potential attacking midfielder, but in recent games against Southampton, Porto and Chelsea he has excelled with Fabinho marshalling the defence.
The energetic former Sunderland man seems to be flourishing in his new role, with Naby Keita also faring much better alongside him.
That trident, with Fabinho holding, seems to be Liverpool’s best setup at the moment and perhaps Henderson can add more goals and assists to his game now as a result of the system.
