Graeme Souness issues verdict as Tottenham close in on Timo Werner
Graeme Souness has issued his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur closing in on a deal to sign Timo Werner in the January transfer window.
Timo Werner looks set to become Spurs’ first signing of the month. Few would have imagined before the window that the Germany international would end up on Ange Postecoglou’s radar.
But it seems that a conversation between Werner and Postecoglou has persuaded the 27-year-old to make the move to North London and have a second crack at the Premier League. Werner is set to join on loan with an option to buy.
Graeme Souness not impressed by Tottenham closing in on Timo Werner
Certainly, his first spell in England did not go to plan. He scored 10 goals in 56 Premier League games for Chelsea before returning to RB Leipzig.

And with that, Graeme Souness has his doubts that he is going to thrive at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Speaking to , Souness suggested that Werner reminds him of one Liverpool star.
“He’s a stocking filler, he’s another body. I don’t think he’ll do very well, but having said that, he’s the kind of player that will get three or four chances every game because he’s rapid and gets himself in the right place,” he said.
“He’s a player who one year could get 30 goals, and the next five or six, so he could have the most incredible purple patch and then Spurs will have to sign him.
“[Darwin] Nunez falls into that category where he needs too many chances to score a goal, but that may change as he’s a young man, Werner, I don’t see that changing, but he could have a purple patch.”
Spurs may know something we don’t
It is an incredibly intriguing move. Werner has not exactly captured the imagination since returning to the Bundesliga – as shown by the fact that Leipzig are happy to loan him out for the time-being.
In fact, his record overall with Leipzig is not too dissimilar to his league record with Chelsea, with 18 goals in 54 games.
But there is a reason that Tottenham have opted to make this move. And it has to be said that Spurs have not got a long wrong in the transfer market over the last few windows.
Perhaps this is going to be prove to be another inspired signing. It certainly will if he hits the purple patch Souness thinks he has in his locker.
