Graeme Souness identifies what Tottenham need in January transfer window

that Tottenham and Jose Mourinho need to sign three new players in January – a couple of full-backs and a different type of central midfielder.

Mourinho watched on as his side suffered their second defeat of his reign, which now takes him to four wins and two losses in six matches. Bayern Munich eased to a 3-1 victory, with Mourinho resting his key men including Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Ryan Sessegnon scored in his first Tottenham start but goals from Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho saw Bayern earn a deserved victory. The match was a dead rubber, given Spurs had qualified but could not finish top of the group.

Souness, who has been renowned for his criticism of Spurs this season, has urged Mourinho to sign two new full-backs and a central midfielder – despite Spurs being well-stocked in those areas of the pitch.

“He’ll be annoyed they’re conceding goals and ultimately he’ll sort that out,” . “That could be a tweak in the way they play slightly, or a tweak in the personnel. Maybe get a slightly different type of central midfield player in there.

“I personally think he needs a couple of decent full-backs but that is only my shout. He’ll address it in his way. He’s got a track record of winning trophies and I think he’ll do the exact same at Spurs.”

TBR’s view – Tottenham need full-backs, but not a midfielder

Danny Rose is way below par and Ben Davies has never been good enough to be first choice. Tottenham certainly need a big-name left-back, but at right-back, Serge Aurier has improved following the appointment of Mourinho.

There are still weaknesses in Aurier’s play, but he can be Spurs’ new first-choice right-back. Kyle Walker-Peters, though, is nowhere near the standard Tottenham require and competition for Aurier is needed.

In midfield, though, Spurs signed Tanguy Ndombele in the summer, while Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama all present options. A central midfielder is not required, but full-backs are.
