Graeme Souness discusses Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal
of Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon at The Emirates that it is “imperative” that the Gunners keep hold of captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang, 30, took his tally to 19 goals for the 2019-20 campaign in just 30 league and cup appearances – 17 of which have come in 25 Premier League games. But his future at the north London club is in doubt.
That is because the ex-AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund striker’s contract expires in the summer of 2021. A new deal is yet to be orchestrated, with supporters concerned that another situation such as Aaron Ramsey’s exit for nothing, could occur.
that Arsenal were expecting an offer from Barcelona in January, and it is believed that an interest will be retained ahead of the summer. Souness believes it is crucial The Gunners keep their skipper.

“He’s 30, at the top of his game,” . “He’s a really good player. He came here, taken the English game into his stride. He scored two very different goals today, one where he is has a significant chance of getting injured.
“The other, he gets set free – Thierry-esque where he’s free. A lot of strikers, alarm bells are ringing at that time. But when he gets free, you believe he will score. He’s a top player, can they hold on to him? It is imperative that they hold on to him.”
TBR’s view – Souness is bang on, but how long will Aubameyang shine?
Certainly, the Gabonese ace is at the top of his game – as Souness explains. Right now, he is certainly Arsenal’s best player and keeping the striker at the club is absolutely crucial, and central to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal renaissance.
But his age must also be taken into account. £56million signing () Aubameyang will turn 31 in the summer – whether he can continue his stunning form in the Premier League beyond the end of his current deal is a big question mark.
That is a question that the Arsenal board will have to debate. Either, they cash in – or take a risk and keep the striker beyond his current deal, hoping he can continue to shine for years to come. That is, of course, if Aubameyang wants to stay.
