Graeme Souness criticises Liverpool’s Super Cup display, singles out Fabinho
Former Liverpool midfielder and manager Graeme Souness was not impressed by his old club’s performance in Wednesday’s Super Cup win over Chelsea.
Souness picked out £100,000-a-week () midfielder Fabinho for specific criticism over the way N’Golo Kante gave him the runaround.
He : “This guy [Fabinho], twice he had Kante dance past him as if he had lead boots on. They were not . I’m not seeing a Liverpool that resembles the Liverpool we saw last season. I’m amazed Liverpool were more tired than Chelsea – they’ve had two extra days to rest.
“I was disappointed with Liverpool. I expected them to be lively, energetic and win comfortably, even by two or three goals. They were second best for the largest part. Chelsea played better football and had more energy. Given Chelsea played Sunday and Liverpool played Friday that should not have been the case.”

TBR’s View – Liverpool left far too much space for Chelsea
Wednesday’s game had the feel of a friendly at times because of the amount of space afforded to both sides, with Liverpool giving Chelsea more, especially in the first half.
Fabinho, as the holding player, had to deal with pockets either side of him but Souness is right to bemoan the fact he couldn’t get near Kante, who was an injury doubt for the game.
Liverpool have already suffered the loss of Alisson and are now perhaps battling fatigue – on the back of an underwhelming pre-season – all while City have beaten them at Wembley and strolled to a 5-0 away win on opening weekend.
The Reds can’t afford to slip behind the pace, but they do have an opportunity to put the pressure on this weekend with a win at Southampton before City face Tottenham.
