Graeme Sharp believes Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin can challenge Harry Kane for England

Former Everton striker Graeme Sharp has backed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to push Harry Kane all the way for England, following his recent call-up to the Three Lions squad.

Calvert-Lewin has started the season in explosive fashion. He already has six Premier League goals to his name, plus another cup hat-trick, taking him just one shy of double figures before the end of October.

And Sharp, who played the number nine role for the Toffees, the Everton star can now push on at international level as well.

“When you look at the kind of striker he is, England have Harry Kane and there is not a lot after that. Dominic gives you something else and the fact he has got a fantastic spring in the air, he gets unbelievable height, they can use to their advantage.

“Harry Kane is in possession of the jersey now and rightly so but Dominic will push him all the way. But Dominic will go there knowing what an opportunity it is for him in these two weeks to stake a claim for Harry Kane’s shirt if he gets injured.” (via )

The former Sheffield United striker will hope to be given a chance by Gareth Southgate over the coming three games with England.

Kane, as Sharp points out, is Southgate’s main man. But with the likes of Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden being left out and Tammy Abraham not firing as yet, Calvert-Lewin could well be England’s next best striking option.

What a start to the season it has been for Calvert-Lewin. Goals, workrate, assists, he has provided everything Carlo Ancelotti could have wanted this term.

His England call is richly-deserved and he will no doubt grasp it with both hands. If he gets his chance for the Three Lions, then don’t put it past him to fire in his first goal pretty quickly.
