‘Got to question’, ‘terrible’: Peter Crouch hits out at two Tottenham players
BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch has criticised Tottenham Hotspur duo Hugo Lloris and Serge Aurier for their performances in Spurs’ Champions League last-16 second leg on Tuesday night.
Jose Mourinho’s charges headed to RB Leipzig hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but ended up conceding twice in the first 21 minutes of the encounter in Germany.
Marcel Sabitzer put the hosts in control with a brace, Lloris getting a hand on the opening long-range effort but not doing enough to turn it away from goal, before being beaten at his near post from the 25-year-old’s header.
For the latter, Aurier’s poor clearing header set Angelino on his way down the left flank to provide the cross for Sabitzer to make it two.
Tottenham were simply unable to break through the opposition defence and the game was put beyond their reach in the 87th minute through Emil Forsberg, whose goal capped off a 4-0 aggregate win for the Bundesliga side.
For the first goal, Crouch told BT Sport, as quoted by : “You have got to question the goalkeeper, in my opinion.
“Yes, he could be further out. Glenn (Hoddle) mentioned before that he does stay on his line far too much.
“But I think he actually gets there, but I just think he has just got to have a stronger wrist.”
For the second, the former Tottenham forward said: “You can see his body shape here, Aurier’s. He takes his eye off the ball completely and then turns the wrong way.
“That is a bad mistake, a terrible mistake. But I think Lloris needs to be highlighted there as well; he is in the wrong position.”
TBR View:
Tottenham are now winless in six games, their last hope of silverware having now disappeared, and their hopes of qualifying for Europe are getting slimmer by the week.
Lloris may be an overall great goalkeeper with a superb CV but he has a history of mistakes in big games, so it will be interesting to see what stance Mourinho takes with him long-term.
As for Aurier, he continues to be disappointing at both ends of the pitch and criticism in his displays continues to increase, and as such it’ll be surprising were Mourinho to keep faith in him next season.
