‘Got the job done without showing off’: £80k-a-week Spurs defender praised for latest international display

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld will be heading back to North London on a high after a successful international break with Belgium.

The Spurs veteran took part in both of his nation’s competitive games this month as they qualified for the Nations League finals.

Alderweireld wasn’t involved in the 2-1 friendly win over Switzerland but played the full 90 minutes in the victories over England (2-0) and Denmark (4-2).

Against the Danes, the Tottenham ace initially struggled, but improved as the game went on, and wasn’t directly at fault for the two goals shipped.

“He started the game with a ball off his head which nearly cost dear,” wrote Belgian outlet , which gave him 6.5 out of 10.

“He struggled to find free teammates and he didn’t always judge the ball’s trajectory well on long Danish balls. Much more comfortable after the 2-1 (Belgium’s second goal).”

Meanwhile, gave the ace 6 out of 10 and wrote: “True to himself, Toby Alderweireld got the job done without showing off.

“The defense still conceded two goals, but the Tottenham player had nothing to do with it. He will have to get used to playing alongside newcomer Jason Denayer.”

Another solid set of performances for Alderweireld, who’ll be looking forward to the European Championships and the Nations League finals next summer.

Having won his place back in the Spurs first team after some time on the bench, the Belgian is likely to be busy right away as Spurs seek to keep fighting on multiple fronts starting this weekend.
