‘Good to see’: Steven Gerrard raves about what two Rangers players have been doing in training

Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has waxed lyrical about Ibrox duo Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten after seeing them competing against each other in training.

In August, Rangers confirmed the signings of the two strikers on four-year deals, Roofe arriving from Anderlecht and Itten joining from St Gallen.

Roofe, 27, registered seven goals and three assists in 16 appearances for the Belgian outfit last season, despite enduring some injury issues.

As for Itten, the 23-year-old enjoyed a superb season for the Swiss Super League runners-up, claiming 19 goals and six assists from 34 league appearances.

To date, Roofe has made competitive Rangers appearances, scoring three goals including the long-range effort against Standard Liege which wowed the football world.

Itten, meanwhile, has featured in competitive action, scoring twice.

In summer, Rangers looked in danger of finding themselves in a personnel crisis up front, but now Gerrard has four strikers at his disposal.

“Strikers pick up injuries and suspensions, they go off form or lose a bit of sharpness so it’s important you have options, people who can take the baton when others are maybe not in a good place,” Gerrard told the ahead of the Lech Poznan game.

“Now is the first time we’ve been in that position this season since we made the acquisitions of Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe. I see them competing against each other in training, which is good to see.

“The training level is really intense at the moment. Everyone’s desperate to be involved and that normally brings out the best of form.”

It’s great to see Roofe and Itten doing so well at Rangers, their efforts helping the Light Blues to the top of the Premiership table and off to a great start in the Europa League group stages.

And to hear that they’re now competing against each other in training, vying to impress the boss for the chance to start, is also great, the level of competition in the squad upping standards throughout.
