Gold suggests Conte would want Steven Bergwijn to stay at Spurs

Alasdair Gold that Antonio Conte would choose to keep Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham Hotspur next season, suggesting that the Italian likes the forward a lot.

It has been a turbulent campaign for Bergwijn. For much of January, it seemed inevitable that he would leave the club. And then, a cameo at Leicester City threatened to change everything.

The Dutchman scored twice in stoppage-time to earn Spurs a massive win. And it seemed to put a halt to any plans to sell him in the winter.

Unfortunately, Bergwijn has not quite managed to kick on from here. The form of Dejan Kulusevski has meant that Bergwijn has had little game-time. And it does appear that he could leave at the end of the season.

AC Milan reportedly want the 24-year-old. And you could understand if some Spurs fans would suggest cashing in if the chance presented itself.

Interestingly, when Gold was asked about Bergwijn’s future, he suggested that Conte would like the forward to stick around.

“I think it’s going to depend on Steven Bergwijn himself and perhaps how hard Ajax push for him this summer. Conte likes him a lot and if it was down to him, he would keep him,” .

“The Dutchman is full of confidence right now after his three international goals in two games and the strike against Newcastle but he’s just unfortunate that Spurs’ front three are flying at the moment.”

Tottenham may face tough task convincing Steven Bergwijn to stay

Conte sees Bergwijn being an important player for him. But the former PSV Eindhoven man will surely need some convincing if he is going to stay.

He has not completed 90 minutes in the Premier League since January. And if Spurs hold onto their current attacking trio, it is hard to see Bergwijn featuring prominently next season.

Tottenham also have to fund their plans this summer. So if a tempting offer for Bergwijn comes in, Conte may have to accept that letting him go is best for all concerned.
