Glenn Hoddle suggests Harry Kane could play behind Tottenham teammate Carlos Vinicius
Glenn Hoddle has predicted that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho may use Harry Kane in a deeper position at times this season to accommodate for Carlos Vinicius.
Spurs centre-forward Kane is a nailed-on starter in the team and has been sensational at the beginning of the season, scoring 10 goals in his opening nine appearances across all competitions.
But his creativity has seen him supply eight assists as well, which is why many are beginning to talk about him as a playmaker.
The 27-year-old talisman has always been a recognised number nine that scores goals at a rapid rate, but he’s added an extra element to his game in recent months and this campaign he’s dropped into little pockets of space at times in the number 10 position.
Kane got the night off on Thursday during Spurs’ 3-0 win against LASK in the Europa League group stages and it gave summer addition Vinicius the chance to start.
The Brazilian striker produced two assists on his debut for the club and lead the line well with his strength, which is why Spurs legend Hoddle has been talking about the possibility of Kane playing behind him.
“Vinicius for me is a real plus. I think there is going to be games where he might start, who knows Harry Kane might just play off him a bit deeper as we’ve seen Harry Kane dropping into these sorts of areas,”
TBR’s View:
If Kane is going to continue dropping into deeper pockets of space he should be allowed to do so, but placing him in a number 10 position from the start of games looks like an unnecessary risk.
The England captain is currently playing some of his best ever football with a ridiculous goal output so changing his position makes little sense, but it’s encouraging to know that Spurs do have adequate cover.
Vinicius was extremely impressive on Thursday against LASK and the Europa League will be a competition that surely he plays regularly, which in turn is going to allow Kane rest periods for the league.
