Glenn Hoddle spots improvement of Tottenham defender Serge Aurier
Glenn Hoddle has hailed Tottenham defender Serge Aurier after he helped his team record a 4-2 home victory against Olympiakos on Tuesday night.
Spurs qualified from their Champions League group with a match to spare following a comeback win against Greek opposition.
Olympiakos raced into an early two-goal lead to capitalise on lifeless start from the hosts, but Dele Alli’s goal on the stroke of half-time got them back into the fixture.
English goal machine Harry Kane scored twice in the second period to help secure the vital win, while Aurier also got himself on the scoresheet with an eye-catching finish.
Aurier scored the third goal with a brilliant half-volley that he managed to drill low into the far corner and it seems like he’s beginning to find some form.
He’s played both games so far under new manager Jose Mourinho and looks a new player.
The right-back has scored one and assisted two more in the last two games, which has highlighted the attacking licence Mourinho has given him.
Hoddle was left impressed by the 26-year-old following his European performance.
“Aurier for instance looks a different player,�
“Aurier is allowed to really get himself high up the pitch. This [goal] is a wonderful finish. He doesn’t try to hit it too hard, he just guides it drills it.�/p>
TBR’s View:
Aurier caught the eye in the league win over West Ham at the weekend and followed that up in midweek by being a star player against Olympiakos.
His time in North London so far has been plagued by inconsistency and he’s certainly not looked the long-term solution for the full-back area.
But Mourinho appears to have breathed new life into him and it looks like he could now be set for an extended run in the XI.
Aurier has been encouraged to attack down the right flank with his pace and athleticism, while his opposite full-back is a little more reserved in helping out the defence for counter attacks.
It’s too early to suggest a mistake won’t be just around the corner, but Mourinho has shown he’s got the ability to get the best out of players.
