Glenn Hoddle praises Eric Dier for Tottenham displays under Conte

Former Tottenham player and manager, Glenn Hoddle, has praised Antonio Conte for getting what he calls ‘a tune’ out of England defender Eric Dier.

Dier has often been lambasted as not being good enough for Tottenham. However, under the guidance of Conte, the versatile Englishman has become a key figure in Conte’s three at the back system. Against Crystal Palace today, Dier was once again fine form as Spurs kept another clean-sheet.

And Hoddle, speaking for, believes both Dier and Conte deserve praise recently.

“Losing a couple of games (to Covid) has allowed him, so I hear, to get the fitness he wanted in them. He couldn’t with all the fixtures. They look more solid. He’s getting a tune out of Dier. Dier in a back three looks like a different player than he has done in the last few seasons,” Hoddle .

Dier has stepped up in the absence of Cristian Romero. The big money summer signing is missing for a period of time through injury. That’s left Dier as the most experienced and reliable option. And in fairness, he is delivering.

And who would have thought we’d be saying that a few months back? Dier has gone from potentially someone Conte might sell, to all-round star. Today, and in other recent games, he has been outstanding.

Hoddle is right to point out his improvement. He is also right to praise Conte for putting the work in.

Tottenham are flying at the moment. And while it’s always been Kane and Son who can’t be dropped, Eric Dier is definitely in that conversation now.
