Glenn Hoddle points some blame at Davinson Sanchez after Tottenham Hotspur loss

Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat in their most recent Europa League clash, with Belgian side Royal Antwerp securing a 1-0 win after an excellent display from the underdogs. 

Tottenham were harangued and pressured throughout and, in the end, can have no qualms about the end result. 

The goal for the Belgian outfit came from the pressure Antwerp put Spurs under. 

Ben Davies dawdled in possession, gifting the ball to Dieurmerci Mbokani. The former Norwich City and Hull City forward streamed away from the Welshman before laying the ball on a plate for Israeli international Lior Refaelov to smash home. 

But one former Tottenham man was not only blaming Davies for the goal. Glenn Hoddle, who played for and managed Spurs, also pointed the finger of blame at his centre-back partner Davinson Sanchez.

Hoddle believes that Sanchez made it too easy for the strikeforce in a two-v-one situation, instead, he should have kept with Refaelov and asked Mbokani to take the finish on himself. 

“Davies obviously makes a dreadful mistake,�Hoddle told “Sanchez has got to make sure the path of that ball cannot be played so that Lloris comes into it and that the finish is at an angle rather than all the angles opened up and Refaelov finishes really well.�/span>

Hoddle’s co-host on BT Sport, former England, and Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves agreed. 

“He makes Mbokani’s mind up for him because Mbokani is not 100 percent sure. Once he overcommits then he just squares it.�/span>

Of course, it was a tough decision for the Colombian to make in this situation and he instinctively decided to go to the ball and try and take the initiative. 

The real trouble was in Tottenham’s overly insipid display, where there was a distinct lack of attacking impetus that allowed the Belgian side to impose themselves on the game. 

Davies�error was born of that and the criticism of Sanchez seems slightly unfair given the circumstances he found himself in.
