Glenn Hoddle lauds Rodrigo Bentancur performance for Tottenham

Glenn Hoddle has told (broadcast on 1/11; 21:31) that Rodrigo Bentancur was the Tottenham Hotspur player who turned their fortunes around with his performance in the second-half of the massive Champions League tie against Marseille.

Spurs were in pole position to get through to the knockout stages. A positive result for Antonio Conte’s men would guarantee that they would get through. However, defeat would see the Premier League side out.

And fans may have been worried that their worst fears were about to be realised. Marseille scored in stoppage-time at the end of the first-half to leave Tottenham in serious danger of being knocked out.

Thankfully, Clement Lenglet equalised early on in the second-half. And Tottenham were much better after the break, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scoring a late winner. Hoddle was certainly in no doubt as to who had sparked the revival.

Bentancur has been an unbelievable signing for Spurs. And it was during the second-half that Hoddle noticed just how much the Uruguayan had given to try and keep Tottenham in the competition.

“Bentancur has absolutely run himself ragged this second-half. He’s chased everything, he’s pressed everything, he’s been good on the ball. He’s the one really, the talisman that’s turned this performance from Tottenham around,” .

The worry for Tottenham is that they went behind once again inside Stade Velodrome. They have now conceded the opening goal in their last five games in all competitions.

Like Bournemouth on Saturday, they were ultimately able to get the result that they needed. But that has not always been the case.

It is encouraging that Tottenham do have other gears they can get to when needed. And they are doing well in both the Premier League and Champions League without playing well.

But they surely cannot continue this way much longer if they want to achieve something special this season.
