Glenn Hoddle critical of Hugo Lloris mistakes in Tottenham defeat to RB Leipzig
Glenn Hoddle was critical of Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris for the role he played during his team’s exit from the Champions League.
Spurs suffered a 3-0 away defeat in Germany against RB Leipzig, which meant they were dumped out of the Champions League last 16 via a 4-0 aggregate scoreline from the two legs.
Jose Mourinho’s side went into Tuesday night’s contest as serious underdogs and the tie was pretty much over within the opening 20 minutes of the second leg.
Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer scored a quick-fire double early on for the Bundesliga giants, while substitute Emil Forsberg added another with his first touch in the 87th minute to add gloss to the scoreline.
Hoddle claimed during half-time that Spurs goalkeeper Lloris should have done better for both of Sabitzer’s goals, the first an effort from the edge of the box that his stretched hand was unable to keep out.
The 33-year-old shot-stopper was then beaten at his near-post by a bullet header and couldn’t stop it from going over the line.
“If he’s in the right position [for the first goal], just a yard inside his six yard box he saves that with ease,”
“It’s something he’s worked at and obviously he wants to be deep in his goals but the deeper you are in your goal you’re giving away the corners. I just think it’s a technical thing he’s got to get out of.
“You can’t be beaten at your near post [for the second goal]. That is outside the six yard box. If you get beat, you get beat across your goal surely. we are digging him out because they’re two mistakes but at the end of the day at the top level, the Champions League, you get caught out if you’re in the wrong position. It’s as simple as that.”

TBR’s View:
Lloris has been on the decline during the last year and has made some individual errors since he recently returned from injury.
He’s had a brilliant career that has seen him win the World Cup with France and he’s been amazing for the North London club, but perhaps they need to look to see if he’s the right option in goal going into next season.
There is still the chance to get in the top four of the Premier League and it should be an extremely important end to the season for Lloris to show he’s still got what it takes.
