Glenn Hoddle compares Arsenal star to Manchester City’s Phil Foden

that Arsenal need to sanction a loan move for midfielder Joe Willock, and compared his style of play and situation to that of Manchester City wonderkid Phil Foden.

Willock, 21, clocked up an impressive 44 clean sheets in all competitions last season and it looked as though the midfielder was only going to get better this time around. But the signing of Thomas Partey has hindered that.

Indeed, England Under-21 international Willock has been limited to just seven appearances in all competitions for Arsenal this season – failing to play a single minute of Premier League football.

The £20,000-a-week midfielder is feeding off scraps and Hoddle believes Arsenal are holding him back. He feels the Gunners should let him leave on loan, comparing his situation to that of Foden at Manchester City.

“There’s a really good attacking midfield player at Arsenal, Joe Willock,” . “He should be in the England Under-21’s. Just my opinion. He loves to get in the box, he can score goals, has a lovely guile about him.

“He has good vision and is brave with the ball. But he’s not in the Under-21’s, because he’s not in the first team at Arsenal. He is a classic example of a player being held back, Phil Foden is another – but he is getting his time now.

“There’s a lot of talent out there, but because they’re not playing at senior level they should be going out on loan. If Arsenal aren’t going to put them in, let them go out on loan,”

TBR’s view – What kind of club would be best for Willock?

A move to the Bundesliga could be beneficial but Willock ideally needs to remain in the Premier League. Joining a side that prefer to play with the ball than without it is crucial.

Teams such as Leeds United, Southampton, Brighton or even Aston Villa would be ideal for Willock – if he is guaranteed regular football. Certainly, he will get more at those clubs then he is currently getting at Arsenal.
