Glen Kamara was a Sunderland target but his Dundee replacement Ethan Robson could be Jack Ross’ future central midfielder

In October 2018, Sunderland sent scouts to watch Dundee midfielder Glen Kamara in action, .

Sunderland joined the long list of clubs interested in signing the 23-year-old, who was impressing for Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.

But Rangers won the race for Kamara, initially signing him on a pre-contract agreement then securing his services immediately.

Ironically, Dundee then moved to sign Sunderland midfielder Ethan Robson on loan to provide short-term cover in that position.

On deadline day, Sunderland loaned out Robson until the end of the season to give him regular playing time.

And despite missing out on Kamara, Sunderland will keep their tabs on Robson’s progress because he could be their ideal future central midfielder.

The 22-year-old has played 14 senior games for the Black Cats, including three this season.

But he has struggled to nail down a senior place in the Sunderland line-up and a loan spell at Dundee can aid his development.

With regular playing time, Robson will be hoping to show Jack Ross that he can be the midfielder he is searching for.

Sunderland may have lost out in the race for Kamara but Robson can show why he can be the answer if he can fill the Finland international’s void at Dundee.
