Gilberto Silva reacts as Leeds star Raphinha suffers facial injury, five stitches
Leeds star Raphinha was forced to receive five stitches during Brazil’s 0-0 draw with Argentina – and Gilberto Silva has reacted on Instagram.
With Brazil’s qualifcation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar secured, a point was needed for Argentina to book their place in next year’s tournament.
They did just that, as both sides played out a stalemate in a close affair on Tuesday. Raphinha lasted 69 minutes before being replaced by Antony.
But the Leeds star hardly went without incident. During the first half, he was on the receiving end of a strike to the face from Nicolas Otamendi.
Clearly, the rivalry remained from last summer’s Copa America final – and Raphinha was the victim. Benfica defender Otamendi went unpunished.
that Raphinha had five stitches at half-time. Gilberto Silva, meanwhile, gave his verdict on Instagram – questioning VAR.
He said on his Instagram story: “The VAR must be sleeping. That is, without mentioning it was in front of the linesman.”

Silva on Leeds ace Raphinha: Bizarre decision to overlook red
Otamendi, formerly of Manchester City of course, was not even shown a yellow card. A ridiculous decision to completely ignore action.
As Silva says, it should have been spotted in play by the referee or linesman. But for VAR to ignore it is astonishing. Raphinha will now have to recover.
Whether Otamendi’s elbow is looked at in a retrospective manner remains to be seen, but such is unlikely, especially at international level.
