‘Get him in the team’: Paul McGrath says Steven Gerrard must start ‘outstanding’ Villa player against Everton

Legendary defender Paul McGrath says Tyrone Mings must start for Aston Villa against Everton this Saturday.

England international Mings was deposed as Villa captain during the summer and replaced by John McGinn.

Mings is not part of the leadership group, which also contains Emiliano Martinez and Ashley Young in deputy roles.

And the defender was not in the starting 11 last weekend, as Villa got their Premier League season underway with a 2-0 loss at Bournemouth.

And McGrath, who knows plenty about what it takes to play at the heart of the Villa defence, had launched a defence of Mings on Twitter.

He said that the England man is good enough to start for Villa and told Steven Gerrard to get him back in the team for the next game.

That match sees Gerrard go up against his former England teammate Frank Lampard in the dugout, as both sides go in search of their first win of the season.

Mings has been hailed as ‘‘ by England manager Gareth Southgate and started the first two games of Euro 2020, as the Three Lions kept two clean sheets.

But his place in the squad for the World Cup later this year will be in jeopardy if he is not starting regularly at club level.

Mings has to try and prove to his manager that he deserves to be put back into the team in the weeks ahead.

It remains to be seen how Gerrard will react to the weekend defeat without his former captain in the side and what kind of changes he makes to his side.
