Gerrard’s Rangers are currently much slicker than Celtic in the transfer market

Rangers were far more active than their bitter rivals and title holders Celtic in the summer transfer window as Steven Gerrard looked to usher in a new era at Ibrox.

The Liverpool icon knew he needed a higher calibre of player through the door to bridge the gap and the club delivered, bringing in a host of new faces to overhaul the squad.

By contrast, across town, Brendan Rodgers missed out on John McGinn during a faltering window which saw the Bhoys fail to build on their recent success and kick on.

That has led to the emergence of a title race closer than Scotland has seen in recent years; so tight that both clubs’ respective January business is going to have a major say in the destination of the coveted trophy.

On that score, Rangers look to be ahead again. Gerrard has already engineered a reunion with former England team-mate Jermain Defoe on an 18-month loan deal and brought club hero Steven Davis back to Ibrox on a temporary basis as well.

Planning has already begun for the future, with pre-contract agreements now in place for Jordan Jones and Glen Kamara to arrive at the end of the season.

Oliver Burke is a coup across town for Celtic, but the behind the scenes operation does not look as smooth and if that trend continues, it is only a matter of time before Rangers eclipse their neighbours on the field too.
