Paul Merson has revealed his prediction for the game between Liverpool and Aston Villa this weekend.

Steven Gerrard will return to Anfield with only one thing on his mind – pick up the three points. Villa have improved a lot under him, but the game tomorrow will undoubtedly be their toughest test yet.

Merson believes that Aston Villa will cause Liverpool a few problems at Anfield. Gerrard’s men are more than capable of hurting them, but the Sky Sports pundit is convinced that the hosts are too strong for the Villans tomorrow.

Here’s what he wrote about the game in his column on …

Merson: Liverpool are too strong for Aston Villa

The Englishman wrote: “Aston Villa will cause Liverpool a few problems along the way this weekend, but will their defence turn up?

“Steven Gerrard’s biggest problem at the moment is consistency – can they step up for a full 90 minutes? They managed it against Crystal Palace, but not against Brighton and Leicester.

“Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane played 60 minutes in what effectively was a dead rubber in the Champions League, and fair play to them. Who wouldn’t want to play at the San Siro?

“I think Liverpool have too much quality for Aston Villa and should be able to win this game. Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Aston Villa.”

Gerrard’s audition?

Every Liverpool fan dreams that Gerrard will return to Anfield as the manager one day. Jurgen Klopp isn’t going anywhere until his contract ends in 2024, but once the German makes way, there’s room for the Reds legend to go back home.

However, Klopp’s boots are huge ones to fill, even for someone as respected as Gerrard. The Aston Villa boss has done well in his managerial career so far, but to be ready for the big job at Liverpool, he has to prove himself.

The game tomorrow may well be an audition for Gerrard. If he can go back to Anfield and get the better of Klopp’s mighty Liverpool side, his chances of replacing the German one day will increase considerably.
