Gerrard reportedly wants four Rangers players at Villa, but potential freebie should be his first target – TBR View

Reports on Monday claim that Steven Gerrard wants four Rangers players at Aston Villa – but Connor Goldson is the one he really needs at Villa Park.

that Gerrard is supposedly considering. It is said he wants Ryan Kent and Borna Barisic down south.

But Rangers are unwilling to sell the duo. It is also believed that Gerrard wants to raid his old club for Nathan Patterson and Glen Kamara.

He has a better chance of getting the latter two, but that it would cost Villa more than £30million. However, another player makes much more sense.

Villa have struggled under Dean Smith defensively. Gerrard himself said on Monday that is one area he would like to change, after replacing Smith.

This season, Villa have conceded 20 goals in 11 games. In the Premier League under Smith, 133 goals have gone in – in just 87 league games.

Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa start – but even Mings has been criticised of late. They also lack strong enough cover, even after signing Axel Tuanzebe.

Villa need Goldson: Gerrard could get Rangers star for nothing

Of all the Rangers players, Goldson is the one Gerrard needs. Signed by Gerrard in his first summer, Goldson has played 183 out of 193 games.

In those 183 games, he helped Rangers keep an enormous 91 clean sheets. He is a leader, a rock and key to Gerrard’s time at Rangers.

His contract expires next summer and is yet to put pen to paper on new terms. He would present brilliant competition for Konsa or Mings.

Gerrard has got to convince the Rangers stalwart to follow him down south, and compete for a place. Next summer for nothing, or on a free in January.
