Steven Gerrard that Rangers losing the Scottish League Cup final in his second season at Ibrox still does not sit right with him as he reflected on how the side developed during his time in charge.
Gerrard spent more than three years at the helm at Ibrox. His final full campaign with the club ended with the side going unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership and winning the title by 25 points.

However, Rangers obviously did not have it all their own way during his time in charge. And he took over a team that appeared to be in some disarray under the likes of Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty.
Rangers did not reach a final in Gerrard’s first season. But they did in the second year, facing Celtic at Hampden Park for the League Cup.
Ultimately, it was the Hoops who secured the trophy. But that was only after one of the most outstanding goalkeeping performances from Fraser Forster.

Rangers had a penalty. Celtic had a man sent off. And the Gers absolutely blew their opponents away. But ultimately, everything they threw at the Hoops’ goal was dealt with by Forster.
And Gerrard admitted that he has not yet made peace with missing out on the trophy that particular year.
“It took time, it took a lot of setbacks, a lot of disappointments, a lot of real tough days for us to get the team and the club where we wanted it to be, to go really toe-to-toe. And that was probably year three. We should have won the League Cup in year two. We totally dominated them and that still doesn’t sit well with me,” .
Not winning more may be one main criticism from Gerrard tenure at Rangers
Gerrard will be remembered fondly at Rangers, even if many were disappointed with how he left. He did explain in the same interview that being closer to his family influenced his decision to leave Ibrox.
He set the stage for Rangers to end their rivals’ spell of dominance. And the Gers enjoyed some superb runs in Europe during his tenure.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst certainly has the tools to do well at Ibrox because of Gerrard’s tenure. But if there is one criticism, it is that he did not win more.
The league title in 2021 was his only trophy with Rangers. And that may come as a surprise to many who kept an eye on Gerrard’s progress without following the Gers week-in, week-out.
